Tips from our Animal Control Unit

Controlling your pets while in public

Several citizens have inquired as to what restrictions there are when taking your pet(s) off your property within the city limits of Overland Park specifically while taking them on a walk or run.

O.P.M.C. 6.08.020 is the dog and cat control ordinance. Under this ordinance when an owner, keeper, harborer, takes the dog from their residential property they are required to have that dog on a leash, no longer than 10 feet in length and the leash and the animal under the control of a responsible person. Whether a person is responsible shall be determined by giving due consideration to the size and the temperament of the animal.

In short, all dogs must be on a leash at all times while off their property and under control. Be mindful that just because your dog is on a leash doesn't mean that you don't have to control it. You are still responsible for the actions of your dog. Penalties for violation of the ordinance are $104.50 for the first offense. Fines go up for subsequent offenses.

The City of Overland Park does not operate any off leash parks; however, the County provides three, including one in Overland Park They are Thomas S. Stoll Memorial Park, west of 119th and Quivira, Heritage Park at 159th and Pflumm in Olathe and Shawnee Mission Park located at 79th and Renner Road in Shawnee.

Also, any owned dog or cat that has resided in Overland Park for more than 30 days, or puppies/ kittens older than six months must be vaccinated, registered and display an Overland Park City animal tag. Pets can be registered at the City Clerk's office located at 8500 Santa Fe during normal business hours, Overland Park Municipal Court located at 12400 Foster. Pet owners can also register pets online at opkansas.org. The cost for registration is $20.00 per non spayed/neutered pet plus proof of rabies vaccination or $10.00 per spayed/neutered pet and proof of rabies vaccination.

If you have questions for animal control you can call the ACO voicemail at (913) 895-6420 and leave a message. An animal control officer will contact you. If you need to have an ACO respond for a call for service you can contact dispatch at (913) 895-6300.
